Sorry i think i am getting a little introspective today.

I will go now to bask in the last rays of sunlight for the day. Hwei Shan says i am like a potted plant. Something someone puts out to get a bit of sunlight. Right.

Do you know that in summer, the sky starts turning bright from 3.30am in the morning? And you can literally see the surronding turning clearer and brighter by the second. I din sleep till 4plus yesterday cuz i was packing. I think i am going to try to wake up early one morning to take in the beautiful sunrise from my window. Only 3 more sunrises to go.

I dun like it when i see people packing and taking their things to their car and clearing up their rooms. It's like the end. I mean, i know it is the end of the year, but it's like so final. Like i said b4, i will see most of them again, but it's like splitting up and we're going our own ways. Especially Iona, whom i am closest to, cuz she's returning to Mauritius, i dun even know when and if i will see her again.

I dun like it that it is already the end of another day.

I forgot to ask my sis to record TAR4.

The temperature today in Guildford is 27C, the hottest yet this year. =) Kind of like preparing myself for home where it is much much much hotter. Apparently this weekend will also be the hottest, with temperatures up to 30C. It's nice to be in the sun and all, but this time there is no cool wind at all, so there's just the heat. Which is not fun. But I love the whole summery feel, when almost everyone is in tank tops and berms and sunglasses, like me. =) Summer is all about sitting on the grass, have ice cream and cold drinks and sunbathing.

Last day of school today. Everyone is already down at Chancellors drinking. David Sneddon is coming tonight. I am not going. I'm not sure whether i regret not going or not, apparently yesterday night wasn't that great. Tonight Iona and I are going to do some cookies and have them with milk and ice cream. =)

I finished packing the stuff i am putting into summer storage. My room now looks very bare, like it was before when i first came. So fast, it's been 9 months already, can you believe it?? i dun even have my radio now, it's in the storage too. I felt like i have gone full circle and it's back to beginning again, bare wall, bare necessities, no radio etc etc. I dunno if i look forward to going back, i am so used to my small little own world here. i mean, i want to go back to Singapore for food for my family for my friends, but i also already know that i will be having serious withdrawal syndromes at the beginning at home. Iona and Chris and Olivier!!!!

Yesterday night, us, the Singaporeans, we had a barbeque at my house. Loads of food, drumsticks, thighs, turkey, pork, sausage, salad, etc etc. we started at half 7 and din finish barbequeing till 11plus, all the while talking and eating and drinking, ending with some ice cream. Such a good gathering, you know, juz to sit around the fire and eat and talk and drink and laugh and joke. And there was even a mystery guest in the form of Jan!!!! Din expect her to come, cuz she lives off campus, but glad she did. =) The food was so so so so so so good, but we had too much and in the end gave some to the ppl who were on their way to town so that they have something to eat before the drinks begin.

Singapore will be taken off the SARS-hit list tomorrow. Juz in time to welcome me back. =)

On a sidenote, Lawrence's wife is here with his son. Let the show begin!!!!!

I dunno the whole story, after all, i don't work in SIA. However, if this is what i am reading, then i think Alpha-S is very selfish.

Oh, and i selected my modules for next semester already. It'll be Rooms Division Management and Travel Catering Operations. =)

The weather is too too too good to stay in. That's all i shall say today. =) for the time being.

I Finished my papers!!! At 1220 today when i walked out of the examination hall. I have never seen anything quite like it today. The paper was 1.5 hours long and we have 30 MCQ. That gives 3 minutes per question and under "university regulations", no one is allowed to leave in the frst 30 minutes. So there everyone was, sitting in their seats impatiently for 30 minutes, and as soon as we reached the 30-minute mark, the hands of more than half of the people in the examination hall went up to hand in their examinations scripts. I was pretty amazed. I wonder how many people actually did check through their scripts. I realised that the people here dun always check throught their script before handing up. However, i did think that the teacher overestimated. One hour would have been juz nice. i checked through (twice!) and then handed in my paper 50 minutes into the exam. By then there were less than 10 people left in the 200+ people exam hall.

Went to Wetherspoons for lunch with Tania. Had minted lamb burger. Thought the portions were huge, but the food was nt too bad,. Value for money. And then walked around. Bought some presents etc etc.

The weather is holding up. That's always good. Apparently it's going to be better tomorrow and thursday!!!

Am searching for shopping centres now. Iona and I want to do some shopping before we go back, but she wants to go somewhere where there is a Mango and I want to go somewhere where there is a H & M. That gives us only 4 options: London, Festival Place @ Basingstoke, The Oracle Shops @ Reading and Bluewater . I dun mind any really.

Will need to reach the airport at 8pm next Monday. But considering how horrible the M25 jams can get, Synn told me i should leave at ard 5.30pm. And Terminal 3 is not actually a shopper-friendly place. Oh well. Rather to sit in the airport and wait than to miss my plane isn't it? And i am lucky since Iona have to wait 8 hours in transit in the Dubai airport.

Also juz realised that French Open started today in the "romantic" city of Paris (I think Paris, i think snobbish Parisians and dog poo). Roddick and Paradorn lost in their first rounds. It's a pity that i am so near, but i can't go watch my favourite grand slam.

I finally found a page on my school's website that actually explains what Lakeside is. It's a shame that there are no pictures of Lakeside though.

Took more photos of flowers again yesterday. Did i tell you i love flowers??? I think i already did. but never mind.

Yesterday, in the comfort and darkness of my own room, i finally watched Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Before you say anything, i know i know that I should have watched it long long long time ago, and that it was the show to watch, yada yada. I also dunnoo how come i din get down to watching the film last year. And by the end of the movie, i was thinking the same thing too. Why din i watch it earlier!!??!?!?!?!? It was so good, i love the big fighting scene at the end, it is so damn cool, and i like how the fighting scenes are injected with scenes of Merri and Pippin on the talking tree (Din get his name). =)

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. December 17th. Will pencil it down in my organiser.

Sunny weather. =) Pls pls pls remain like that till June!!!!!!

Juz went to the gym. Decided to stop by the library on the way back. Cuz me, the SIA-crazed girl, wanted to check something online that i've been forgetting to check, and that is the Movie Listings for inflight entertainment on SIA. Was really really happy, cuz these are the movies on board: Chicago, Gangs of New York, The Hours, Daredevil, About Schmidt. I really really want to watch these movies, esp since i missed them when they were in the cinemas.

But then i realise something, i was looking at May's movie listings, and no, i am not flying in May. I am flying in June, won't tell you how disappointed i am when i realised this is what they are showing for June:

1. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
2. Cradle 2 The Grave
3. Phone Booth
4. Femme Fatale
5. Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind
6. The Jungle Book 2
7. Pipe Dream
8. Till Human Voices Wake Us
9. Repli-Kate
10. Tomb Raider
11. Gladiator

How many current movies have you actually heard of in this list?? There are only 3 movies that i feel like watching, that is, How to Lose a Guy in 10 days, Confessions and Jungle Book 2. From 4 Oscar-worthy movies to this. Almost, juz almost wish that i was flying in May 31st, instead of June. Nvm, shall remain contented that i am taking SIA afterall. =)

Btw, I want to thank the outgoing SIA CEO, Dr Cheong for bringing SIA to where she is today, even though SIA could be in the red by the end of this financial year. Sigh, hopefully SIA will recover soon.

I am crazy, i know, but that's me, the SIA-crazed girl.

Yesterday, my flatmates in the room next to and opposite mine finished their exams, and both simultaneaously decided to have impromptu karaoke sessions, so from my door, i can hear my flatmate singing to Enrique "king-of-melodrama" Inglasias' Hero (A song which i absolutely absolutely hate) and from my window, my other flatmate was rapping to something with "ash to ash" in the lyrics and alternating between this, Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys. Boy, I wished i had a tape recorder then.

Heh, i think 4 years ago, i was so crazy about this particular phrase, "Tank, i need an exit, fast." Should i watch it in Odeon, or should i watch it with my sis when i return to Singapore?? Why am i thinking about this kind of nitty gritty stuff, as usual??

Finished my paper at 10am. Tourism Operations 2: Tourism Transport and Travel Distribution. Yes, that is the full name of the module, quite a mouthful, i know. Everyone juz calls it TO2. It was more difficult than the past year paper we did, but should be okay. Went to Chancellors (The Union bar) with Tanya and Grace for breakfast. Had a breakfast wrap, which is bacon, egg and sausage in a tortilla wrap with a Cafe Latte. Very nice, but would be better with some salad on the side or in the wrap But then i forgot, a salad is not on the menu of an English Breakfast. =)

Wednesday, May 21, 2003

Juz finished my 2nd paper. It was okay i think. MCQ paper, but cuz there was negative marking, din want to take too many risks. =) Yesterday's accounting paper was juz crap lah. I made a HUGE HUGE careless mistake which should not have happened if i am not confused by the wording of the question. And why am i confused by the wording of the question? Because it was A BLOODY MISTAKE!!! The lecutrers made a mistake and they din even tell us that there was a mistake, leaving us to wonder why we can't get the value as stated. Everyone was juz raising their hands and asking questions. The worst part? The ppl in the other examination hall knew that there was a mistake in the exam paper but not us!!! Where's the consistency?

But it's over. Got only 2 more MCQ papers to go and then 12 more days to going home. =)

Am suddenly feeling very thankful. Saw one of the ducks juz resting outside my house door, seemingly unaware of everything else around it. Juz suddenly felt very thankful for its presence, for the presence of all the ducks, swans, geese at the lake and at Terry's Pond. And even thankful for the lake itself. Thankful that i have this beautiful lake by which i can sit down and have lunch and juz watch the world go by. Am thankful for all the nature around me, all the flowers, the trees etc etc. Which makes me thankful for the chance to be able to come aboard to study and experience all these. =)

Am grateful too that you are reading this. =)

Lunch was good. I was very full. Scampi Flambe and White Chocolate Fondue. I skipped the starter cuz i knew i would be full and i wanna save my stomach for the dessert. =) Ioannis was very nice, he came over and talked to us about the food, next year, the exams etc. Geoff was very nice too, he gave me a free camomile tea. Feeling a little emotional again, cuz my friend is the last management group for the semester and after today, this Lakeside Restaurant in AZ building will close its doors for the last time and move into the new Management Building. It's a happy thing i know, new building, new restaurant, new auditorium, new computer labs. It's juz that i had so so so much fun at this Lakeside that i am sad to see it go. No one knows what will happen to it now, but it won't be the same next year in the new building already isn't it? I will only get to work in Lakeside for 2 days next semester if i indeed take up FnB Management.

Oh yeah, David Sneddon, the Fame Academy winner, the one who sang "Stop Living The Lie" and "Don't Let Go", he's coming to our Union on the 30th May. I like his songs. Yes, the real person himself.

Yesterday's meal at Wagamama was good. They were really hightech, using Compaq PDAs to take orders and the service wasn't too bad too, even though they missed out my order. Iona and I shared the side dishes, ebi katsu and duck gyoza, and then i had a kai sen udon, a fancy name for seafood udon =), and Iona had Kare Lomen, which looks suspicious like laksa to me. And apple and orange juice and fruit juice. The portion sizes were HUGE. You dun feel it at first, but the moment you stand up, you feel like you're going to fall over and have to sit down again. Maybe that's juz me and iona, but that's how we feel. oh btw, i am very happy, finally got to eat squid. =) Have not had that for a long long time.

Then we went down to Debenhams which is juz across the road and was having a sale yesterday to walk off some of what we have eaten. Iona bought Christian Dior's J'adore. I wanted a bag from Jane Norman, but must. curb. any. shopping. intentions. now. =)

Today is Tanya's and Felicity's management day at Lakeside. Will be going over there to have lunch in a while, since they came for my management day. But i still feel a little full from yesterday.

Am i the only one who doesn't know that there is no accounting tutorial today???

Yesterday night's Employers' Function was a blast. The Employers' Function was basically a dinner for placement tutors, students and employers who were involved in last years' placement. Fot the students, it was a time to get together and celebrate a graduation for their placement, something like that. About 13 of us first year students volunteered to prepare and do waitressing for the function, so got a chance to "do Lakeside" with people who don't work on Tuesday like Michelle, Ella etc etc. I like it when it is not as formal and then we all go crazy and do stupid things and put on stupid songs. I was in the kitchen and had to cut about 50 tomatoes...., thank goodness they don't make you tear or anything like that. Also got to talk to some of the students and found out how they felt about their placement, got some advice from them too... everyone thought the service was great!!! =) There was potato salad, raw green salad, coleslaw, baked salmon brushed with white wine, Chicken with a mushroom and panacetta sauce, Asparagus and tomato quiche, Truffle Torte and strawberries and cream. I think the food is really really good, since we got to try the leftovers. Good food, that's all part of hospitality too, ian't it??

I juz realise that last year this time, i was in UK with Hwei Shan and we were looking at Royal Holloway and Surrey and making our decisions about which universities we wanna go to. Hwei Shan is in NTU now and I'm here. We're both finishing our first years liao....

The sudden inspiration to post on my blog came yesterday around 1717, shortly after it had started raining when i reached home. Typed it on my laptop instead...

13th May 2003 @ 1717
Today is a very wet day. It has been raining on and off for the past few hours. The funny thing is, we had a hail storm. Not kind of expecting that, esp in May, but it was interesting, having small "pebbles" of ice fall from the sky that is not the soft white crystal known as snow or that transparent liquid named rain. It would be painful if you get caught in the storm. But a rather pretty sight. There's thunder and lightning too. I can't tell you how long ago it was since i saw thunder and lightning.

As i was saying... It's my last day at Lakeside as part of the Tuesday group. So fast, isn't it? It's been such a regular occurance to walk down to Lakeside every Tuesday morning, go for lecture, then change into my Chef's or Waiter's uniform and then have biscuits and coffee before starting work. I've learnt a lot at Lakeside, both FnB related as well as non FnB related stuff like presentation, time management and at the same time i had loads of fun talking while having lunch and dessert. Hmm... i also know that i will miss the food at Lakeside and the technicians, Geoff, Lis, Paul, Karen and Carolyn. It has to be the most interesting module in my first year here at Surrey.

Oh yeah, this is something that i tried out on Monday and it is absolutely fabulous. here goes...

Cinnamon Apple on top of a Spiced Fruit Muffin
What you need:
1 spiced fruit (English) muffin (i like the Sainsbury's one)
1 dessert apple of your choice (Royal Gala, Pink Lady and Golden Delicious are the best)
1/4 tsp cinnamon powder
1/4 tsp nutmeg powder, optional
1 tsp raw cane sugar
some melted better/margarine

Core the apple and cut it into thick apple rings. Brush with melted butter on both sides. mix together sugar and cinnamon powder and coat brushed apple rings with the sugar and cinnamon sugar. Place coated apple rings on a grill and allow to cook for 4-5min until the sugar caramelise and the apple bubbles. In the meantime, split the muffin, spread with butter and toast it. Once apple rings are done, serve with muffin, butter and jam.

Tastes like an open apple pie.

Some weird parent in China juz named his child Saddam SARS.... what??? What were they thinking? What is this world coming to?

On other happy notes, I. Have. A. Date. With. Wagamama!! Yeah, i am going for a free dinner at Wagamama this Thursday!!!! Iona and I were walking along the path outside Wagamama on Saturday afternoon and this lady came up to us and asked if we would like to have a free preview dinner at Wagamama as part of their staff traning. Of course i do!!!! It's Wagamama. I love the udon/noodles there!!! So they arranged a time for us and sent us a confirmation. Viola. Won't tell you how happy i was. You already know that.

Today is my last day at Lakeside Restaurant. Won't work there anymore this semester as a Tuesday group. (not counting tomorrow, the Employers Function). Had a good lunch though. Wild mushroom pasta, with Cherry bakewell tart and diet coke.

Not too bad, but not their best. Dun think there is enough cranberry. And since today is Singapore's Mothers' Day. Happy Mothers' Day Mummy and to all other mummies out there who could be reading this. Not that i think there are many. =)

I've been here for 3 hours, is there really so much to see??

Take a look at this. It's a speech by a graduating student in UCBerkeley, came across it while i was at a fellow blogger, Faith's website. Juz thought it was pretty meaningful and really true. Corinne wrote this on the card she gave to me b4 i left, "Enjoy yourself. University life is what you make of it." And as i enter my last week of lessons before exams as a first year student here, i can't help but feel this is SO true. It's been so fast huh? Juz seems like last week or last month that i was meeting my flatmates, Iona, Olivier, Chris, Matt, Thanos, Stian, Gemma and Steph for the first time and now it's only 3 weeks left before everyone will be going their own ways. I know it's not like i won't see all of them again (except Iona, unless i fly to Mauritius to see her, and Stian), but what we have in House 62, the cameraderie and the closeness and the laughter, in exactly 3 weeks, it'll be nothing but memory.

I can truly say that i have enjoyed myself during my 9 months here in England. As in life, there were ups and downs, there were times when i complained about UK, about the weather, about people who treated me badly. I was angry when someone stole my freezer bag. I was homesick and crying when i talked to Mummy on the phone. I was fed up with Grace for not taking the initiative, for leaving everything to me. I was tired, but i still have dunno how many more pages to type. But i had my fair share of happy times too. New Year's Morning Monopoly, CNY Steamboat, Playing in the Snow, Working and having fun at Lakeside Restaurant, Fetish Nights at the Union, International Night, Weekly Dinners with my Singaporean Kor kors(that, sadly, were not continued anymore), watching DVDs till 4am in the morn, Drinking parties, Fireworks during Guy Fawkes Night, Cocktails at New Orleans Bar. Remember Nadia? The "stuck up racist dumb blonde" that scolded me on my first day at Lakeside? We're friends now, i can happily say. =) Things happen in the most unusual ways.

This is getting a little depressing. I still have my end-of-module FBO test (Ioannis' words, cuz it is not scheduled as an exam) to study for. I better stop here. Maybe i will come back to this in 3 weeks time. Maybe i won't.

Went to town today. Did some major shopping. At least major by my standards. Bought some socks, bought presents, bought food, bought a Blue Harbour Polo tee for Daddy. Hope i got the right size though. Not too big or too small. Tried Caffe Nero's Cafe Latte. not too bad, though i think the barista was a bit mad. Trying to be friendly, but i think he went overboard. Dunno why, but I was on a service hunt today. The service at M n S was crap, the cashier snatched the card from my hand, he was like in a mad rush or something, i nearly wanted to ask him, "Are you in a rush?" The best service of the day have to go to the guy at Argos, who was very nice and friendly and efficient without seeming too impatient.

This is so totally bo liao. I juz realised how different life is from home and here. I mean, i know there are loads of differences and i have realised them the moment i was here, but this is juz one thing that struck me as i was walking into the library juz now. I remembered how it was back home in Hwa Chong that I always have to go to the library to study cuz it was so hot outside and the aircon in the new library was like an instant relief. And today the weather was like really really hot. The sun was out, there were no clouds etc etc. And all i wanna do was to bask and study on the grass, with the sun shining over me. I'm serious. I study in the library in Singapore to escape from the sun and right now it is juz the other way round. There is a problem though. I need a table to study/ read, so it's kinda difficult to study on the grass, and most of the time, i end up people watching. Which is actually not that boring a thing to do really, except that i need to study.

Yesterday was so crazy. I told you that i went to the library to return the book that is due yeah?? Cuz i dun want to incur the £1.50 fine for an overdue reserved book. After i've done that,i went back to my room and refreshed the page to check my loans list. and it says that i have a book overdue!!! Where did this overdue book come from, since i returned the book already?!?! On CLOSE observation, i realised that i have not one, but 2 books that are due yesterday. And i've returned only returned one of them. Which means i still incur a fine anyway. Oh well. I have 2 books due today, so better not forget.

Tuesday, May 06, 2003

I dunno why i am doing this, but i left my laptop connected to the internet in my room and i am now surfing the net in the library. why am i doing something so silly? Because i juz realised that i have a book that is due today and i can't renew it cuz someone reserved it. So i had to walk to the library at 9.30pm in bermudas and in freezing cold to return it b4 it closes at 10.

Made Lasagne yesterday night for Iona and myself. Added turkey mince, onions, mixed vegetable, borccoli and Tesco's Orginal Pasta Sauce. Absolutely fantastic, even i say so myself. You know how you can feel really satisfied after a good meal? That's how i feel. The best thing is that we have leftovers, so i am going to have that for dinner tonight. Happy.

Today's weather is so so so so so so so so so so so so good. You know when the sun is shining and there are no clouds in the sky at all?? Yeah, that's how it is today and it really makes me wanna sit on the grass and have a picnic or something like that. Today is like the perfect day to go to Guildford Castle to do that. But i cannot do that. Why? cuz i have to study FnB. I can't believe the weather is distracting me from my studies.

My wisdom tooth came out liao. Actually i think it was out a long time ago, but i din take notice until yesterday night when it bled while i was brushing my teethBAs long as it doesn't affect the alignment of my teeth esp since my dentist already made allowance for it when i did my braces. But the bleeding scared me a lil. Should be fine i think.

Also need to get my meningitis jab at the Health Centre. I actually had one already before i came. But the people at the Health Centre said that the vaccine not strong enough so have to take the stronger one in April. I dun feel like going.

Had a weird dream. Can't remember what it was now.

Thursday, May 01, 2003

I typed half way juz now, then this whole thing shut down on me, dunno how come.... but anyway....

Today, i finally checked my back balance. And it reads £x, where x represents a certain value (of course you dun expect me to tell you how much there is in my back account!) The best thing is x includes the cheque that i cashed in before Easter.... Natwest cashed my cheque! Very happy, even though it is juz a small amount, i still can buy some things with it. So i went to town with my friend (which i already intend to do) and did some modest shopping. =)

But even though Natwest has cashed my cheque, i think they are still pretty crap in that their staff are not well trained to know/understand all the products offered by the back inself and they did not do some of the things that they have promised. How can i leave someone who doesn't know what the bank offers with my money?? So when i return home next semester i am going to close this account and open a new one with HSBC, which after a lenghty survey with my friends, is concluded to be the best here, well, the best of the crap anyway, cuz there is no comparison with the banking system here and singapore.

Mummy's Day this year is on 11th May. Thinking of ordering a cake online to be delivered home. But it's difficult to find a cake shop that does not charge exobidant (spelling?) delivery charges for delivering a cake. Flowers are boring. At least she can enjoy the cake. What else can i do???

Got back my TO2 and my Law assignment. TO2 got 54% and Law 63%. Apparently Papa (short for Dr. Papatheodorou, my TO2 lecturer) gave everyone pretty low marks and in one case even failed my friend. He marked it really strictly. That means must work harder for the exam now. That leaves only the result of one assignment which i did not get back yet. That is my Lakeside Management Project and i will only know the results of that during my exam week.

Edited to add.... i juz realised my typing today is horrible... full of speling mistaks.

Edited to add again... i realised that even my edited to add has 2 mistakes in it. But i dun want to change it. Juz being boliao here. =) What else is new??
