AUSTRALIA-SINGAPORE OPEN-SKIES TALKSQantas chief slams SIA bid for transpacific route
SIA points to Qantas' record $590m profit as proof that it can take on competition
By Roger Maynard
Australia Correspondent

SYDNEY - QANTAS chief executive Geoff Dixon yesterday blasted Singapore Airlines (SIA) for trying to take a slice of the Australian national carrier's lucrative transpacific routes to North America, even after Qantas reported a record half-year profit.

Speaking a day after Singapore Transport Minister Yeo Cheow Tong said that SIA could be flying the route within a year, Mr Dixon launched a three-pronged attack on SIA's case for an open skies policy.

At a press conference to announce that Qantas' net income rose 28 per cent to A$458.4 million (S$590 million), the airline chief argued that opening up the Australia-US route to SIA would not necessarily reduce fares; that Qantas would be at a disadvantage; and that competition was not properly regulated in Singapore.

He insisted that Qantas would be the loser from any such deal. 'We don't have the same rights out of Singapore as they would obtain if they had these (Australian) rights,' he said.

'We have made that plain to the (Australian) government - obviously the government has taken that on board.'

Regarding the view that competition would mean lower fares, he said it was 'a little bit unlikely'.
'I mean they (SIA) are not known around the world as a low-fare airline, and if you go to Singapore, I am quite sure you don't get too many low fares,' he said.

He also suggested that this could be due to a lack of competition regulators in Singapore.
In response to Mr Dixon's remarks, SIA contended yesterday that Qantas' half-year results are ample testimony to its ability to face competition.

'This (Qantas) is one of the most profitable airlines in the world,' an SIA spokesman said.
SIA also said Mr Dixon's argument that Qantas does not have the same rights on routes out of Singapore is incorrect.

'He is confusing rights out of Singapore - which are very open - with rights into other countries, which are not within the jurisdiction of Singapore to fix,' the spokesman said.

Australia is actively seeking better access to key European cities for its carriers. Transport Minister John Anderson will travel to Europe in the next few days for talks on this subject.

On the issue of SIA's fares, the SIA spokesman said: 'Only weeks ago, Mr Dixon was in Singapore complaining about how SIA was selling at or below fares being charged by Jetstar Asia, and now he says we're not known as a low-fare airline.'

After holding talks with Mr Yeo, Mr Anderson made it clear that no decision on the open-skies deal would be made until he had had discussions with key stakeholders, including Qantas.

However, Industry and Tourism Minister Ian Macfarlane hinted in a radio interview that Singapore's request might be granted, subject to conditions.

These might include a ban on SIA flying the 850-seat A380 Airbus, which it will start operating next year, on the Australian route until Qantas takes delivery of its own A380s about six months later

Duh things said during the Olympics...

Paul Hamm, gymnastics gold medallist
"I am very grateful to my parents, espcially my mum and dad".

Sports Commentators
"If history repeats itself, we would see the same thing happening again"

Other funny things
"This (basketball) player dribbles a lot, and the competitors do not like it at all. In fact I can see it on their faces."

This were quotes which my Organisational Behaviour lecturer used during today's lectures, even though i can't quite remember what we were talking about...

Been a really fun day, played Chinese Whispers during Service Sector, and OB was really interesting, at least I didn't have 2 boring lectures (which can happen on a bad day)!

2005 History Tour The consent forms for the Eastern Europe Tour will be available soon. An announcement will be made during morning assembly. Your daughter/ward can then collect the form. Meanwhile please view the itinerary to see if the tour is suitable for her participation. Highlights from previous historial trips: Germany, Austria & the Czech Republic (2001) and Western Europe (2002).

Guess where they are going? Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary!!!! I don't believe it!!! These days kids are getting luckier and luckier!!! I mean, I haven't even visited these places myself and I am just 2-3 hours by flight away!!

The calendar of events is somewhat interesting too... These things caught my eye

4 Mar: Pri Prefects Training by Sec Prefects

11 Mar: Detention Class

1st thought: Secondary School prefects training the primary schools ones? In what? I know some MGS prefects could not be considered to be role models at all...

2nd thought: Now let me think, how did we/Mrs Ong punish the rule breakers last time?

Quite happy with myself... I went to gym yesterday!!!! And managed to do one hour's worth of work at the gym
BUT
I proceeded to negate all its effects by going to the kebab shop and have a big fat lamb kebab!!!
BUT
The main point here is to have made a start, no? :) Ooh, I still can do my step machine!!!

NUS beats Princeton, Cornell in social sciences ranking

How???? I dun trust this ranking by Times Higher Education Supplement, cuz this is the same website that said NUS was 18th Best in the World, ahead of Columbia, Cornell, UCL, IC etc etc?

Do u think it is possible???

And once again Happy Chinese New Year everyone!!! I'm decked out in somewhat new trousers (ie.worn once or twice), new shirt and my new red Furla bag, my leaving present from the guys at the Mayfair!!! And I am feeling someone festive, though a tad tired, having only slept at 2-plus yesterday!

Mediacorp radio online is crap, it never ever streams properly, probably buffers like 10 times per minute.... so silly yeah? So i manage to find Ufm 100.3 which not only streams perfectly, but is also playing CNY music for both the 1st and 2nd day of Chinese New Year! How cool is that? Dongli88.3 also streams nicely!!!! Very proud of my find... :)

Today went for the Chinese New Year Gala at the Union, started with good food, but was somewhat spoilt by people who don't queue and people shouting at us to get away from the food. I thought it was a bad idea, put Chinese with a buffet table, and what would you get? People who linger around the table and will keep on topping up their plate, yeah? Anyway, after that was the gala performances, with a mix of traditional dances, music performances, opera, pop songs, dances etc. Some were entertaining, some were downright boring, and some were hilarious!!! Terrence was playing the guitar in the skit, and we made sure we, singaporeans made ourselves heard!!! Fun!!!! So anyway, 11 minutes to Chinese New Year!!!!!!

Mei Tiao Da Jie Xiao Xiang
Mei Ge Ren De Zui Li
Jian Mian Di Yi Ju Hua
Jiu Shi Gong Xi Gong Xi
Gong Xi Gong Xi Gong Xi Ni ya
Gong Xi Gong Xi Gong Xi Ni!!!!

Happy New Year Everyone!!!!!!!!

Wan Shi Ru Yi

Not sure if all the hanyu pinyin is correct, but u get the idea!!!!!!

Happy Chinese New Year Eve!!! Now branded with music!!!

Nian Nian Nian,
Yuan Da Jia Dou Guo Ge Kai Xin Nian!!!!!!

I think the music is really really cool!!!!!!

I torture myself... I think I really do enjoy doing that. How? By reading The Straits Times, or more specifically, the Sunday Times Life Section about Chinatown, the night market and everything else about it.... Now i juz want to go home for Chinese New Year!!!! I want to go back and eat the green eat mochi, and see the dyed pussy willows, and watch brainless TV shows and juz enjoy the buzz of it all, you know what i mean??? I think Chinese New Year is always the worst time for me... I always feel most home-sick around Chinese New Year!!! =(

Saturday, February 05, 2005

As you can see, I've decided to change my blogskin, cuz decided since New Year is coming, it's time to change, like you know, wearing new clothes for the new year? Yeah, same theory.

Anyway, yeah, i was actually looking for something CNY themed, but then cannot really find, so decided to use this one instead, cuz the strawberries are really RED, which is what CNY is roughly about yeah? The strawberries as a symbol of CNY.... Weird, but if u imagine hard enough, it might juz stick.

Had a cholestrol ridden, really fulfilling meal after a very fun baby shower...

KT's flatmate's mummy cooked a spread of good and wonderful foood, so we had
- winter melon soup
- Tempeh Tempura, Tempura prawn, sweet potato in tempura
- Oyster omelette
- fried mee pok
- tau foo skin with pork belly and pork tongue and black fungus
and to end off, fruit platter of supersweet winter melon and oranges (credit to KT, who chose them)

Satisfied, to say te least. I am FULLY satisfied...... with eating familiar food like tau foo skin and winter melon soup and trying new things like oh luah (yes! It's the first time i tried it) and pork tongue (weird taste).

Tuesday, February 01, 2005

I was juz reading a random blog juz now and i dun understand how ppl can like House of Flying Daggers. One even went on to say that this is the movie to make up for all the bad movies? Like wtf? The House of Flying Daggers is the damper of all the good movies (eg. Terminal, Shrek 2, Love Actually, ROTK, 13 going on 30) that I watched last year!!!

Btw, i regret not going to watch the Arsenal v ManUtd Match!!! So exciting, even juz for the follower reading the commentary online....

Now that the whole project thing is over, can now do other things... other things such as cooking!!! I juz suddenly have the urge to cook a lot of things, especially to cook some soups... Also dunno how come soups, but i really feel like doing a good soup, you know??

Maybe because i made potato and carrot soup on Sunday, that's why all of a sudden wanna make soup all the time. Soup is good. :)
